Good to Know Before You Go – Emerald Island Trails

Fitness & Activity Level:
This tour includes light to moderate hiking in Knuckles, Horton Plains, Ella, and Sinharaja. A reasonable level of fitness is required. Bring sturdy walking shoes, a daypack, and be ready for off-grid nature experiences.

Eco-Stays & Local Hospitality:
Some accommodations are eco-lodges or forest camps, designed for immersion and simplicity. You may not have full luxury amenities, but you’ll gain authentic, close-to-nature stays — often hosted by local communities.

Weather & What to Wear:
You’ll experience a mix of highland chill, rainforest humidity, and coastal warmth. Pack:

  • Lightweight layers
  • Rain jacket and quick-dry clothes
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent

Train Ride Experience:
The Nanu Oya to Ella train ride is one of the most scenic in the world. Seat class may vary based on availability. Trains can run on Sri Lankan time — slow, but beautiful.

Wildlife & Nature:
Safaris, birdwatching, and rainforest trekking offer amazing chances to see elephants, deer, monkeys, and endemic birds. Wildlife sightings are likely but not guaranteed — bring binoculars and patience.

Cultural Etiquette:
For temple visits (like Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth), wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees. Remove shoes before entering.
